Platform Taxonomy Tree
An interactive radial tree of the PayAtlas taxonomy — payment methods, services, industries, geography, and currencies, from top-level domains down to individual terms.
About this Insight
The PayAtlas taxonomy is the backbone of the catalogue. This radial tree maps it in one view: a single root branches into five domains — payment methods, services, industries, geography, and currencies — and each domain branches into its categories and then into the individual terms within them.
Switch between a tidy layout, which keeps the structure compact, and a cluster layout, which lines every term up on the outer ring so the breadth of each branch is easy to compare.
The tree opens with the domains and categories visible and the individual terms collapsed. Click any branch to expand or collapse it and focus on the part of the taxonomy you care about.
Insight FAQ
What does the Platform Taxonomy Tree show?
It maps how the PayAtlas taxonomy is organised. A single root branches into the main domains — payment methods, services, industries, geography, and currencies — and each domain branches into its categories and then into the individual terms within them.
What is the difference between the tidy and cluster layouts?
Both arrange the same data around a circle. The tidy tree places each node at a radius based on its depth, keeping the structure compact. The cluster layout pushes every leaf to the outer ring so all terms line up at the same distance, which makes the breadth of each branch easier to compare. Use the toggle above the chart to switch between them.
How do I expand or collapse a branch?
The tree opens with the domains and their categories visible and the individual terms collapsed. Click any node that has children to reveal or hide its branch. This lets you focus on one part of the taxonomy at a time instead of rendering every term at once.
Which domains are included?
Five hierarchies are shown: Payment methods (payment method categories and their methods), Services (service categories and their services), Industries (industry verticals and the industries within them), Geography (regions and their countries), and Currencies (currency types and the currencies within them).
Why are some taxonomies not on the tree?
Flat reference lists with no natural parent grouping — such as merchant category codes, regulators, and jurisdictions — would make the chart unreadable. The tree focuses on the five domains that have a clear category-to-term hierarchy.
What do the colours mean?
Each domain has its own colour, and that colour carries down through its categories and terms. This makes it easy to tell at a glance which branch of the taxonomy you are looking at.
What does the number in the tooltip mean?
Hovering a domain or category shows how many individual terms sit beneath it. For example, a payment method category will show the count of payment methods it contains.
How often is the taxonomy updated?
The tree is generated directly from the live PayAtlas taxonomy, so it reflects the current set of payment methods, services, industries, countries, and currencies as they are maintained in the platform.
